Women Football Skittish Sumaila Upset Canada
AUG 6, 2014 LISTEN

Unpredictable and swift Sherifatu Sumaila's 22nd minute goal was enough for the Black Princesses to upset host nation Canada in their opening match of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup at the National Soccer Stadium in Toronto.

Ghana had not scored a goal at this level since 2010 when Ghana romped past Switzerland by 2-0 but coach Bashir Hayford came out before the match to say that he was not going to allow that to eat into his squad and rightly so he attacked the Young Canuck's from the onset.

With the Princesses entertaining and pushing forward in an attempt to signing the opening account, defender Kadeisha Buchanan stood between the host and the goal.

In the 22nd minute Sherifatu Sumaila went through the Young Canuck's defence before releasing Edem Atovor but her effort was pushed into play by goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan which Sumaila capitalized from a close range to slot in the only goal of the match.

Canada's best chance arrived a few minutes before the interval when Emma Fletcher's shot from the left struck the post.

Coach Andrew Olivieri's side turned the screw on in the second half but could not pull parity.

In the other group A match former champions Korea DPR won 2-1 against Finland to put them on top of the ladder.
