Ghana U20 management committee chairman George Afriyie believes the team's qualification to the African Youth Championships is gravely needed to restore confidence in Ghana football following the Black Stars poor campaign at the World Cup.

The Black Satellites will have to beat Gabon over two-legs to seal qualification to next year's finals which will be staged in Senegal.

There have been a lot of heat in Ghana football following the Black Stars' poor showing at the 2014 World Cup.

Ghana failed to live up to the billing to make a crashing first round exit from the tournament hosted by Brazil.

And the Black Satellites management committee chief believes the team's success in qualification is crucial now more than ever help atone for Ghana's disastrous World Cup campaign.

“Ghana football is not in its best times due to the Black Stars disappointment in Brazil,” George Afriyie told GFA TV.

“And therefore for us to begin to atone for such a disappointment, we need to beat Gabon here and beat them well so that the second leg is made a mere formality.”

Ghana will host Gabon in the first leg of the ultimate qualifier on August 17 before traveling to Libreville for the return encounter a fortnight after.

The Black Satellites were held to a thrilling draw by the Namibia U23 team in an international friendly played on Sunday in Accra.
