Santos moved into the quarterfinals of the Caf Confederations Cup when they narrowly beat King Faizal of Ghana 2-1 in the second leg of the soccer competition played at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday.

Santos led 1-0 at the interval.

The teams played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Ghana two weeks ago.

Santos took the lead as early as the 4th minute when John Mbidzo took a free-kick 30 metres out. The ball was headed down by Marawaan Bantam and three Santos players tried to put the bobbing ball into the net.

Eventually it fell to Musa Otieno Ongao to stab the ball home.

The visitors almost equalised in the 14th minute when Eric Gawu provided a dangerous centre but AbubaKar Yahuza kicked high over the bar.

They came close again later in the half when Kamaal Saait, who was having a good game, had a run down the right, cut in and shot. The shot was saved by goalkeeper Suraju Mohammed.

The visitors were far quicker in the second half and their youthful stamina was having an effect on the older Santos players.

It appeared as if it was only a matter of time before they equalised. It duly came about in the 68th minute Duran Francis tried to chest the ball to Saait but Gawu intercepted and easily netted.

In the 82nd minute the homeside took the lead when Jean Marc-Ithier netted a loose ball.
