The Australian is the only non-Mercedes driver to win a race this season, with his triumph at the Hungaroring representing his second 25-point haul after topping the podium in Canada last month for Red Bull.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso came second to record his best result of what has been a disappointing season so far, while Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton produced a superb drive from the pit-lane to finish third.

The Briton overcame team orders and a late challenge from team-mate and title rival Nico Rosberg on the final lap, managing to gain three points over the German in the race for the drivers' championship.

There were a number of crashes in the early stages of the race as drivers struggled to get to grips with the slippery conditions, Hamilton himself spinning as he struggled to warm up his brakes sufficiently.

Caterham's Marcus Ericsson suffered a heavy crash on lap nine, an incident which led to the safety car being deployed.

Lotus' Romain Grosjean also went into a spin whilst the safety car was still out and after pitting while in the lead, Rosberg lost ground and fell to fourth.

All the while, Hamilton was making his way through the field, and passed Toro Rosso's Jean-Eric Vergne on lap 34 to take second, behind Alonso.

With 20 laps to go, Hamilton was ordered to let his team-mate pass him, despite Rosberg sitting a second off the Briton, and the 2008 champion refused to yield as he chased down Alonso.

Ricciardo took on fresher soft tyres six laps later, emerging behind Rosberg, who also pitted in an attempt to make a late burst at the lead.

A three-way scrap then ensued between Alonso, Hamilton and Ricciardo at the front, with Rosberg making ground on the leading trio with every passing lap.

Ricciardo made use of having superior tyres over his rivals, overtaking Hamilton on lap 67 and then Alonso on 68.

From there the Red Bull rookie was able to cruise to victory, with Alonso easing to just a second podium of the season as Hamilton fought hard to keep Rosberg at bay.

With F1 taking a mid-season break, Hamilton will spend the next four weeks just 11 points behind Rosberg before action resumes in Belgium.
