Eight swimmers for Great Britain Masters

Accra, April 3, GNA-Six male and two female swimmers have been selected to represent Ghana in the Great Britain Masters Swimming Championship scheduled for the United Kingdom from April 21 to 23. They are Adu Opanka Okai, Offei Aferi, Kwami Kpodo, Jacob Lartey, Abdul Fatawu Moro, Anthony Mobutu, Esther Esi Amissah and Anyimah Ackah.

The competition organised by the Ghana Swimming and Life- Saving Association at the Tesano Sports Club in Accra on Saturday selected Ghana's team for the championship event when Opanka clocking one minute 14.67seconds to win the 100 metres Freestyle event and the second position in the 50 metres event.

Mobutu, Aferi, Lartey, Kpodo, and Moro were also selected for winning the 100 metres, 50 metres Breast Strokes and Back Strokes respectively while the two females won the 50 Metres Back and Breast Stroke events respectively.

About 114 swimmers took part in the exercise, which was sponsored by Exact Results Company Limited.

Mrs Zinabu Akoto, Chairperson of the Association called on Ghanaian girls to take active interest in swimming so as to keep them healthy at all times. She regretted that the sport, which used to be one of the popular games in the country, had died down and the Association has plans of resuscitating it to ensure that the sport is revived and nurtured to reach the international level.
