On this day in 2013, Black Stars defender John Paintsil was arrested by the police for stabbing his wife.
This was confirmed by the Greater Accra Police PRO Freeman Tettey in an interview with Joy News.
Freeman Tetteh said “Paintsil was held for assault and causing harm.”
Haruna Maiga, a freelance journalist who was at the Legon Police where John Paintsil was held said “The deputy Black Stars skipper was brought together with his three kids. They were escorted by a group of police men, one armed.”
The wife, Richlove Paintsil was reported to have jumped the Trasacco wall to her neighbour, ostensibly to escape the assault of the husband but Paintsil was alleged to have followed her into the neighbour's house and handed a few slaps to the man holding the wife.
The wife was said to have felt unconscious after sustaining serious injuries to her eye. It was not clear the cause of the misunderstanding, but the police described the incident as domestic quarrel.
Paintsil's wife later denied allegation of assault and stabbing against her husband, saying it was just a domestic quarrel.
Paintsil was part of the Black Stars team that came fourth in the just ended 2013 Nations Cup.
