Ghana midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng made an injury return just in time to play for Schalke 04 but he could not turn their fortunes as they suffered a 3-0 home loss to English giants Chelsea at the Veltins Arena on Tuesday night.
The 26-year-old passed a late fitness test and trained with the Royal Blues squad on Monday.
With Schalke's injury miseries compounding, manager Jens Keller welcomed the enforcer into his midfielder but they were unable to stand the might of the 2012 winners who recorded victory thanks to a double strike from Spanish hit-man Fernando Torres and Belgian Eden Hazard.
Boateng missed Schalke's weekend nervy win over Eintracht Braunschweig.
