Kwesi Appiah is happy to lead Ghana's push for a World Cup final round place when they face Zambia in a crucial qualifier on Friday that they cannot afford to lose.

The Black Stars coach has guided Ghana to the summit of the Group D table and only one point away from reaching the next round which will see the winners of the two-leg play-offs going on to Brazil.

Renewing their rivalry with Zambia and, having lost their last two meetings, Ghana will be seeking to change their fortunes.

"What gladdens my heart is when you to speak to the players they are pushing," Appiah said on the eve of the match with the Chipolopolo.

"They are not thinking about negatives. It's important that we stay positive and work to achieve a result."

After picking 12 points from a possible 15, Appiah is excited with Ghana's quiet recovery that took them from second place to the top.

But he is aware that their push for a third consecutive appearance at the World Cup will be decided by tie with Zambia, which starts at 16:00 GMT at the Baba Yara Stadium.

"We started training on Monday and the players have been doing very well, they have been very cooperative," he said.

Ghana need to avoid defeat to go through to the next round.

"They have been training very well and appreciate the task ahead of them. They are physiologically okay and are pushing.

"I believe we are on course."
