Patrick Tender shot a fantastic 66 net off handicap 7 on Saturday to seal off an exciting win during the April Lipton Bi-Monthly Medal. The wind-swept course at Tema played host to some of the finest amateur golfers in the capital.
Tender, a Woodin sponsored golfer maintained a great deal of consistency with his swings albeit unsteady approach shots to outlast the Men A field.
Playing alongside Ghana's renowned mogul, Sir Sam Jonah and Captain of the Club, Dr. Owusu Baah, the young chap had a very comfortable lead ahead of the two on the front nine; a feat that got him the nickname 'Mugame' by his playing partners.
“I was leading them hole after hole and they decided to call me Mugabe because according to them, I wouldn't allow them a single chance to overtake me.” Tender explained to The Golfer newspaper
Entering the round, Tender birdied the par -4 second after securing a par on hole 1 and went on to sink birdies on the par-5 ninth and the par-5 eighteenth. Bogeys on holes 6, 7, 10 and 13 couldn't derail his route to triumph as he succeeded to make pars on the remaining 11 holes.
Tender's cousin Sampson Attiogbe was second after a net score of 67 off handicap 5 placed him a shot away from the spotlight. Peter Amenyo managed a net score of 69 off 3 to stay three shots off the lead with E. Nyarko on the same score but separated on countback.
In the Ladies A Division, Florence Etwi Barimahsurfaced winner after she returned a net score of 74. Jessica Tei trailed second on 78 with Leticia Amponsah-Mensah on same net score for third place but separated on countback.
Meanwhile, H. Keglo shot a net of 64 off 20 to win the Men B Division. J. Peprah followed in second place with 66 off 26. Helen Appah emerged winner in the Ladies' B with a net score of 70 after beaten Cherie Hammond into second place on a net score of 75.
Event Sponsor, Lipton provided stunning trophies and souvenirs to winners in the various divisions. The one-day competition brought together other golfers mainly from Achimota and Sakumono to be part of an exciting day.
