BoG wins 2003 ABFA Gala

Accra, Oct. 12, GNA - Bank of Ghana (BoG) defeated International Commercial Bank (ICB) 1-0 on penalties in the finals to win this year's All Banks Football Association (ABFA) gala played at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra on Saturday.

On their way to the finals, BoG who won the competition last year, eliminated Standard Chartered Bank 4-3 on penalties, edged out Barclays Bank Ghana Limited 5-4 also on penalties and beat Agricultural Development Bank 5-3 also on penalties while ICB beat Ecobank Ghana 1-0, and accounted for Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) 4-3 on penalties. Ghana Commercial Bank won the Ladies event for the first time by beating Agricultural Development Bank 1-0 in the finals. The Goal King award went to Robert Banga of GCB while ICB won the 'Fair-Play' award.

Other banks that took part in the competition were The Trust Bank, National Investment Bank, CAL Merchant Bank and Stanbic Bank. Mrs Matilda Obeng-Ansong, Managing Director of GCB who was the guest of honour said the association organised the competition to strengthen the cordial relationship between the banks and called on the association to strive hard to achieve their aims.

At Legon, the finals of the 'Welcome Back to Campus' gala between Sarbah Hall and Commonwealth Hall ended abruptly in the 13th minute when supporters of Sarbah Hall besieged the field to protest against bad officiating by the match officials.

Sarbah Hall was leading 1-0 at the time of the incident. In the Corporate Bodies event, Spacefon defeated Joy FM 1-0 to lift the trophy.

The competition was jointly organised by Scancom Ghana Limited, Multichoice Ghana Limited, Joy FM and Guinness Ghana Limited for students of the University of Ghana.
