SG-SSB a leading Bank in Ghana presented a cheque for GHc5000 to the Ghana Rugby Association at a ceremony in Accra on 30th May 2012. The Managing Director Mr. Gilbert Hie making the presentation stated that SG-SSB was one of the few corporate entities in Ghana that has consistently shown commitment in the provision of sponsorship to the Rugby sport. He indicated SG-SSB has since 2005 provided support towards the development of the sport amongst basic schools, the development of a league and also the provision of training for Rugby trainers.
The Managing Director Mr. Gilbert Hie stated SG-SSB believed in Sustainable Development and Corporate Social Responsibility and interpreted Corporate Social Responsibility as To Care, To Share and To Respect with the Bank sponsoring health, sports, education, art, culture, education and the environment. As a Bank that Cares, SG-SSB shared with Rugby the values of team spirit, commitment and respect.
The President of the Ghana Rugby Association Gifty Annan Myers stated that SG-SSB had a long relationship with the Ghana Rugby Association and had sponsored the Confederation of African Rugby U18 Tournament hosted in Ghana. She stated that the Ghana Rugby is currently at a stage where the Development of Rugby in Schools programme is being hampered by lack of Rugby balls. With the procurement and distribution of Rugby Balls to children in schools children would be encouraged to handle a rugby ball from an early age. The program scheduled to launch in June this year is dubbed “CATCH THEM YOUNG” and as Ms. Myers puts it, “the success of this program will underline the success of Rugby in Ghana”.
SG-SSB is one of the leading banks in Ghana and is a strong local bank that operates 45-networked branches across Ghana specializing in Retail, Corporate and SME. The Bank is a subsidiary of the Société Generale Group which is one of the largest European financial services groups. Société Générale has been associated with Rugby since 1987 when the Bank became an official partner to the French Rugby Association. The French Rugby Championship as result of the Société Générale tremendous support was renamed the Société Générale French Championship in 1988. In 1991 the bank became the official sponsor of the second Rugby World Cup.
