GNAF trains sign interpreters

Kumasi, May 31, GNA-The Ghana National Association for the Deaf (GNAF) has organized a two-week sign language training programme for interpreters to improve their skills and help the deaf in accessing information with ease.

The interpretators were chosen from six Districts including the Ga West, Efutu District, Ketu South, Kwahu West, Ejisu- Juaben and the Asante Mampong .

The programme which is under the theme “Strengthening the disability movement in Ghana”, is sponsored by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).

Mr. Sambian James, Director of GNAF said the essence for the training was to equip interpretators with modernized way of making information easily understood by the deaf, especially when they wanted to access social services like healthcare and others.

“The deaf are always at bay at the police stations and the courts because there are no interpreters,” he added.

Mr Sambian said all interpretators would be placed in key government institutions like the courts, health centers and the police service in their respective districts so as to interpret things for the better understanding of hearing impaired persons when the need arose.

In line with this, the Association also aimed at expanding the language center at the University of Ghana and the University of Education, Winneba, and set up another one at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
