Homicide Unit Takes Over Investigations Into Teiman Unexplained Deaths

The late Mr Eric Nai Kwadey, hosted his three friends to a meal of rice, pork stew and some drinks. What was obviously a celebration party, turned tragic. The Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has taken over investigations into the death of two persons in a house at Teiman, near Oyarifa in Accra, last Sunday.

The two men — Mr Eric Nai Kwadey, a senior technical officer at the University of Ghana Medical School, aged 53, and his friend, Nii Ako Ashong, 59, a farmer resident at Teiman — were found dead in the sitting room of the house.

According to the police, the two men were found dead in sofas without any signs of a struggle.

Post-mortem examination on the two bodies is also scheduled for Tuesday.

Two other men who were found unconscious in the room are still in very critical condition at the Ridge Hospital in Accra where doctors are working around the clock to revive them.

The report on the leftovers of the meal, together with the alcoholic beverage, which were sent to the Police Forensic Laboratory is yet to be released.

Deputy Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohonu said, the police would leave no stone unturned in unravelling the circumstances that led to their death.

He said investigators from the CID Headquarters who visited the scene saw a generator in the hall where the bodies were found.

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that there had been frequent power outages on that fateful day and so Mr Kwadey and his friends watched the football match between Chelsea and Bayern Munich with the generator.

It was realised that all the windows to the house had been shut, thereby fuelling speculation that the two might have died from carbon monoxide poisoning from the generator.

DCOP Yohonu said the football match dragged on for well over two hours and so if the generator was sitting a few metres away from the television, then it was likely that they might have inhaled the carbon monoxide.

He said it was strange that none of the victims called for help when they realised that they were in distress, as all of them had their mobile phones with them.

He said the police had passed on the information about the generator to the doctors who were looking into that possibility.

Meanwhile, the family of the deceased said they suspected a foul play in the death of their relative.

One of Mr Kwadey’s sisters, Mabel Kwadey, said it was hard to believe that his brother had died just after taking his evening meal.

The four men were said to have taken a meal of rice and pork stew prepared by the senior technical officer and topped it with an alcoholic beverage while watching the European Champions League final match between Chelsea and Bayern Munich last Saturday.
