A tumbled bill board at Abossey Okai, near the central mosque in Accra A heavy windstorm accompanied by torrential rainfall that hit the coastal belt of the country on Saturday afternoon caused considerable damage to property.

In Accra, some trees fell under the impact of the ravaging storm, while giant billboards tumbled on roads resulting in serious traffic congestion in some parts of the metropolis.

The storm which started around 2:30 p.m. and lasted more than an hour left parts of Accra and Cape Coast in complete darkness following a destruction of high tension cables in many parts of the Accra metropolis and the Central Region.

Among the affected areas in Accra were the Spintex Road, Achimota, Dansoman, Madina, Dome, Odorkor, Ashale Botwe, Weija Barrier and Asylum Down.

A source at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) told graphic.com.gh in Accra that the organisation had received eleven reported cases of fallen trees in various parts of Accra.

It said a team of officials from the Rapid Response Unit were on the ground to assess the level of damage in order to provide relief to affected people.

Describing the form of damage in the affected areas, the source said a tree fell across the Darkuman Nyamekye road and the Kwame Nkrumah Circle near the Niagara Hotel, while another tree collapsed on a house at Sukura. Another tree fell on a high tension cable at Atomic disrupting electricity supply.

Some houses and institutions, according to the NADMO source, also had their roofs ripped off.
