Twenty basic schools received 480 computers in UWR

Wa, Jan. 27, GNA – Twenty basic schools out of the 150 schools in the Upper West Region have received 480 computers under the Basic School Computerisation Project at a cost of 240,000 Ghana cedis.

rlg Ghana Limited, a Ghanaian computer manufacturing company, is expected to provide the remaining 130 basic schools with computers at the end of June, Mr. Sam Kwesi Fletcher, Head of Corporate Affairs of rlg, made this known in Wa on Thursday.

He said about 3,600 laptop computers would be supplied to the schools in the Region under a partnership between rlg and the Government through the Ministry of Education.

Mr. Fletcher, who presented the computers to the out-going Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Issahaque Salia, said more basic schools would be provided with computers.

Two schools each from the districts and four schools from the Wa Municipality received the computers with each school taking 24.

Mr. Fletcher said it is expected that 60,000 computers would be given to basic schools throughout the country and pleaded with those schools that had not yet received theirs to be a little patient.

Alhaji Salia said the government would equip school children with information and communication technology skills to help develop their future and that of the country.

He appealed to teachers to be interested in enhancing the interest of their students in information and communications technology and said “That is the only way they can be part of our world and make things work for the development of their communities”.

Mr. Iddrisu Mahama, Upper West Regional Director of Education, said 90 teachers had been trained to teach the students on information and communication technology and appealed to teachers not to divert the computers for their personal use to the detriment of their students.
