Accra, Dec. 6, GNA – The investiture of the pioneer batch of the African Football Hall of Fame has been set for February 2012 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

The ceremony will be held on the sidelines of the CAF General Assembly to be held in Malabo during the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations to be co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

A statement signed by Ayotunde Adelakun, President of the Hall of Fame International copied to GNA Sports said the initiative is geared towards honouring and celebrating the continent's past and present footballing heroes in Africa.

It said the first awardees for the Hall of Fame status will be announced shortly.

“The membership of our Hall of Fame will cut across all spectra of African football – players, coaches, referees, administrators and any other persons who have made a contribution towards positively putting African football on the world map.”

The statement said the members will be nominated by the general public via the website of the organizers and will be scrutinized by the Board of Trustees to determine the worthiness of the nomination.

“We have also planned for a physical Hall of Fame for African football with portraits, profiles and video clips of nominated African Football Hall of Famers at a yet-to-be determined location.

“We will also set up an African Football Hall of Fame Trust Fund, which would seek to use the proceeds of the Hall of Fame to seek to look after the welfare and well-being of our current and past football greats who might be in need,” the statement concluded.
