Gyan wins GUBA Best African Sports Personality Award

Accra, Nov. 15, GNA – Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan scooped the Best African Sports Personality Award at an awards ceremony held in London, England last week.

Gyan, who plays in United Arab Emirates, grabbed the topmost honour at the 2011 Ghana-UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards held in November 6 in recognition of his outstanding sporting achievements.

The 25-year old warded off competition from Ivorian duo of Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba and Nigerian Peter Osaze Odemwingie to win the flagship honour.

A statement from the organizers, Speak to Dentaa, copied to GNA Sports said the event was to celebrate the achievement of individuals and businesses within the Ghanaian and African Communities in the United Kingdom from July 2010 to July 2011 in the areas of commerce, sports and entertainment.

Other award winners were Andy Ansah – Best Entrepreneur, Lady Gifty Tetteh – Best Lady Professional, Tullow Oil – Best Business, Money Gram – Money Transfer, Owusu Frimpong – Radio Presenter, Ernest Simons – Photographer and Joana Abeyie – Print Journalist.

The rest are Fidel Frimpong – Rising Star, Vida Yiadom Boakye – Student Achiever and Ghana Education Project- Charity.

There were also Special Achievement Awards for Cos ov Moni, James Barnor (50 years of photography), Kwame Sefa Kanyi (Popular host of morning show in Ghana for 11-years) and Samuel Awuni (a Cocoa farmer) and a Life time Achievement award for Lord Paul Boateng, UK's first Black Cabinet Minister.
