President of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF) Ray Quarcoo says a major revival is creeping into amateur boxing, the sport that has brought so much fame to the country.

To the GABF boss, the sport has been relegated to the background for long, and the rippling effect has hit the pro division.

'We want to lift amateur boxing to its rightful place. We are putting measures in place to raise it to the level football has attained,' he said after a special boxing bonanza at the Bridge Foundation last Saturday.

'The Federation in its bid to put an end to ad-hoc preparations towards competitions is also in the process of scheduling joint training programs and competitions with neighboring countries (Nigeria, Benin) to enable boxers experience international competition. This constitutes the Federation's short-medium term plan,' he disclosed.

The successful hosting of the special boxing bonanza dubbed, 'The Possibles Vs The Probables' has stirred the GABF to replicate the exercise every six weeks to keep up the enthusiasm among the amateur boxers.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Clement Kofi Humado, in the company of his lieutenant Ruben Nii Nortey Dua, thrilled by the boxers' brilliance' pledged the ministry's support for boxing.

'We are sourcing funds to put up a boxing gymnasium at the Obra Spot, Circle. The Captan brothers have also put their hands to the wheels as we strive to construct the facility,' said the minister.

The 12-bout competition sponsored by Dave Harper, Chairman of the GABF sponsorship committee and the Chief Executive Officer of Geodrill Mining Co. Limited, recorded some interesting results.

Michael O. Dodoo recorded a 2-0 win over Bright Ayala, while Victor Kuonu defeated Jessie Lartey 4-2 in the light welterweight division. Promise Sogbe bowed 0-6 to Benjamin Lamptey.

The Bantamweight division saw Isaac Sackey triumphing over Duke Micah with Anna Ampiah winning 6-3 over Abdul Wahid Omar. Sulemanu Tetteh won 6-4 over Isaac Fiifi Tailor.

Emmanuel Bawowe, Azumah Mohammed and Sena Agbeko won over Jiblin, Anani Kutsukey and Nana Yaw Afriyie respectively.

David Okine registered a 7-1 victory over David Bawa in the Heavyweight category.

All the boxers took home special cash prizes for their efforts.
