Hockey sticks

There is growing interest for hockey among the youth of Winneba, around the University Education Winneba (UEW) Campuses.

The insatiable desire for the stick sport, orchestrated by the tireless efforts of Ghana captain, Ebenezer 'Eddie' Frimpong, forms part of the Ghana Hockey Association's (GHA) bid to promote and develop the sport in the other regions.

The instructors threw more light on the technicalities of the game and advised parents to co-operate with their children when it is time for  rehearsals. The children on the other hand shared their experiences with the gathering.

At the FIH youth development program which drew parents, students and lecturers  of UEW, Dr Henry  Augustine Pufaa, head of HPERS, UEW, urged parents  to take keen interest in the sport in an attempt to support and encourage their wards.

He admonished parents to take advantage of the free registration to allow their children to be part of the program saying, 'Hockey teaches great lessons in discipline, and therefore I will advice that you encourage your children to take advantage of the program.

'I see this exercise as the beginning of good things to happen to hockey in Winneba, thanks to the Ghana Hockey Association for its support and Eddie for his tireless efforts in making sure that the sport grows,' he added.

He advised the trainers, Kofi Wilson Bentum and Frimpong to avoid old methods of coaching and embrace the new in their quest to develop the sport in the region.

UEW Students Representative Council (SRC) presented a plaque to Frimpong, embossed with his picture, for his exemplary leadership style in the advancement of hockey at the school.

At the end of the FIH youth development exercise, 25 players would be selected to feed the various juvenile national teams.
