Nigeria Jega Visits Anambra Thursday To Meet Monarchs, Electorates
NOV 4, 2010 LISTEN

INEC chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega will on Thursday visit Anambra state on a one-day official working visit in the state which has been billed for Friday.

Our correspondent gathered that Jega will be in the state to meet with traditional rulers and other electorates on a sensitization tour to speak to the people on the forthcoming voters registration exercise.

The visit will make the state one of the first states where the INEC chairman will be visiting since he assumed office months back. According to the resident electoral commissioner for Anambra state, Prof Chukwuemeka Onukaogu, Jega will be meeting the traditional rulers at Palace View Hotel Onitsha to seek their cooperation in the voters registration exercise.

He however declined to say if Jega will also be expected to address the lingering problem of the state chapter of the PDP on which the commission will deal with. The zonal working committee had conducted a congress to come out with elected state officials when another faction of the party led by Chief Benji Udeozor has denied that its tenure would elapse in December 2011 before any such congress could be held.

The INEC had however previously notified that it will only recognize and deal with the latter faction in obedience to the court ruling that they be recognized as the authentic faction of the party.

It would be noted that the Chief Emma Nweze led state working committee as elected by the recent congress conducted by Barr Olisa Metu is still laying claim to the position, while also screening candidates for chairmanship and councillorship positions in the forthcoming LG elections in the state.
