Globacom Has Enriched African Soccer

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Issa Hayatou has commended telecommunication giants, Globacom Limited for bringing a positive global focus on African soccer and players.

Hayatou made these remarks as both organisations signed a five-year extension of their partnership agreement for the Glo-CAF Awards on Friday August 27, at the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

By the extended partnership, Globacom will sponsor the annual event that honours African football and administrators who distinguish themselves in a particular year till 2015.

In his welcome remarks during the contract signing ceremony, the CAF President highlighted the importance of showcasing the beauty and talent of African football to the world.

Hayatou said Globacom's association with the annual event during the past five years has projected the awards to higher heights and urged them to do more.

“During the last five years, Globacom has taken the awards to new dimensions by their association. We urge them to redouble their efforts to improve upon their past records to make the event amongst the best on the global scene”, the CAF President charged.

Globacom has been sponsoring the annual awards since 2005.

Responding on behalf of Globacom, Mrs Sarafa-Yusuf Omodele, the company's Head of Sponsored Assets said the next five years of partnership with CAF will be focused on adding fresh perspectives and greater value to the awards.

In her words, “Globacom is a young African company and it is not a surprise that football is our passion too.

In the last five years, we have been more involved in football at different levels in many countries on the continent and the extension of this partnership is a demonstration of our willingness to do more for African Football and African youth in partnership with CAF.”

CAF Deputy General Secretary, Hicham El Amrani and Globacom Head of Sponsorship Assets, Sarafa-Yusuf Omodele, concluded the signing of the renewal agreement.

The event has since been held in four cities; the 2005 edition was held in Abuja (Nigeria), 2006 in Accra (Ghana), 2007-Lome (Togo), 2008-Lagos (Nigeria) and 2009-Accra (Ghana).
