Pepsi Hockey League - Week 22 Results

Marine Overtake Exchequers Marine Sticks of Ghana Navy this afternoon brightened their chance of winning the 2002 Pepsi Hockey League with an emphatic 4-1 win over youthful and skillful Kingsticks. Perhaps the Marines have Golden Sticks of Ghana Commercial Bank to thank for the splendid performance they put up to hold the defending champions to a 1-1 draw in a nerve racking game that was filled with incidents. The results put Marine 2 points ahead of Exchequers to top the League Table at the end of the 22nd week. The Marines struggled in the first half of their game with Kingsticks dominating play from the push-off. Indeed the young lads took the lead in the 9th minute of the game through a brilliant flick from promising player Elekem Akabah. The Marines had to wait till the 35th minute when they pulled the goal back in a rather controversial circumstance. The Kingsticks lads stood ball watching due to a judged infringement in their scoring area, only for Patrick Taylor to slot home from close range for the equalizer. The second half was virtually a one-way traffic situation as the Marines stepped their game and tight-marked the Kingsticks lads thus shutting them out. They did not only close them in, the Marines also attacked in rapid succession to score 3 more goals in the 42nd, 47th and 57th minutes to finish winners and eventually top of the league table.
