Do you know that the World Cup football competition began in 1930?
The first competition was organised by the Federation Internationale de Football Associations (FIFA).
Since then, World Cup football has been held every four years, except during World War II — 1939 to 1945.
The championship was the idea of the Frenchman Jules Rimet and the World Cup Trophy, awarded for the first time to Uruguay, was named after him.
Brazil won the competition for a record three times in 1958, 1962 and 1970 and so it was decided that they should have the trophy permanently.
The Jules Rimet Trophy was then replaced by a new trophy, the FIFA World Cup.
