Kotokos Moroccan opponents on strike

Players of African Cup Winners Cup finalists, Wydad Athletic Casablanca (WAC) of Morocco, are reported to have embarked on a strike action over unpaid bonuses. The amount involved runs into thousands of dollars.

The strike action comes some three weeks before the Moroccans engage Ghanaian giants and one of the greatest sides in Africa, Asante Kotoko, in the first leg of the African Cup Winners cup competition in Casablanca.

Indications are that the strike action, if not addressed immediately, could be a big psychological blow to the Moroccans' ambition to annex the Nelson Mandela trophy.

WAC is one of the leading clubs in football-crazy Morocco and the club is said to command great following in that country.

The strike action is therefore a surprise to many football-loving fans, especially as the club is reported to have spent so much in acquiring coach Oscar Fulone.

Oscar's credentials in Africa football look quite awesome, having won the more prestigious African Champions league with Asec d'Abidjan and Raja Casablanca in 1998 and 1999 respectively.

WAC are not new to Asante Kotoko as the two sides clashed in 1987 in the African champion clubs competition, which saw Kotoko eliminating them on a 3-1 aggregate with George Arthur scoring a goal each in the two legs.

It is expected that Kotoko would not allow the strike action by the players of WAC to push them into believing that all would be rosy.

The Oseikrom lads have sworn to capture the cup for themselves and Ghana for the first time this year, and nothing should or can stop them in their tracks.
