Ghana fine AWOL Essien, Muntari and Gyan
Ghana football authorities have slapped a US$15,000 fine on three Black Stars players for absenting themselves for international duty.
Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari and Asamoah Gyan did not turn up for last month's friendly against Angola in Luanda under controversial circumstances.
The three players have also been asked to write a letter to apologise to the technical handlers and their colleagues for their absence.
The trio must also pay the fine within seven as the Ghana FA seeks to clamp down on indiscipline in the squad.
"After giving hearing to Black Stars players Messrs Sulley Muntari, Michael Essien and Asamoah Gyan; it became evident that the players have shown remorse for their actions," the Ghana FA said in a statement.
"Therefore after considering their interest as professional footballers and that of Ghana football, the following decisions have been taken which have to be complied with within seven (7) days effective 9th December, 2009;
"That the Players are to apologise to the Technical team and players of the Black Stars.
"That each person is to pay a fine of Five Thousand United States Dollars each."
The money will donated some of the charities and good causes supported by the Ghana Football Association.
Essien and Gyan apologized to the GFA explaining their difficulties in playing in the said friendly and pleaded for clemency.
Muntari has still not apologised or explained his absence.
