…And Glo Premier League too
In line with its tradition of promoting African football, Supersport in collaboration with Ghana's Metro Tv has re- affirmed its commitment to continue with the coverage of the Glo Premier League by bringing viewers two matches every week – one live and one delayed.
A statement from the company said: “We are looking forward to create a focused African football channel next year and our Ghanaian games will form a key part of this programming. Supersport is investing in Ghanaian football because we know it is one of the most exciting and competitive leagues on the continent. We want our viewers to share that experience. And we want to play our part in helping to bring the excitement and excellence of the Ghanaian league to football fans across the continent”.
Speaking on behalf of Supersport, the Marketing Coordinator- Africa, Itumeleng Senne said, Ghana remains a vital part of Supersport's football focus and as such, Supersport is delighted to be able to broadcast another season of the Glo Premier League.
Supersport will share the matches with Metro Tv with one live match (exclusive) and another, delayed (non exclusive). In addition, the club magazine programmes of Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko will continue to show on the channel.
She called on all to help develop the African game by patronizing the local league rather than paying homage to the European leagues. “African football can't get to the stage we want it, if we continue to shun most of the local league matches played on home soil. This is ours, no one can develop it for us, we have to do it ourselves hence attending most of the beautiful games played. Africa has a lot of talents out there and Supersport is helping to showcase to the rest of the world, what it is that we have that they don't have. This is the passion of the people of this continent”.
Her words were re-echoed by Felix Awogu, who called for a concerted effort in making the various local leagues in Africa very popular. “Every now and then, the television and radio stations keep previewing and reviewing the foreign leagues without making time to comment on the domestic league and how best to develop it. This is certainly not right and must stop”.
Supersport has the right to broadcast the various domestic leagues in some African countries including Zambia, Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana. Metropolitan Television (Metro TV) is responsible for providing the local content of the league for Supersport South Africa in Ghana.
In a related development, Supersport has launched a new satellite (W7) which has the capacity to add more channels to the ones currently on air and also deal with the intermittent interruptions the channel suffers as a result of poor weather conditions.
