The Chairman of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Mr. Ray Quarcoo has stated that the success story of the national amateur boxing team - the Black Bombers, is just a foretaste of what will happen in the forthcoming World Boxing championship.
Speaking to this writer during the team's arrival last Wednesday night at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), Mr. Quarcoo noted that: “The team will return from the World Championship in Milan with more medals than they won in Mauritius.”
Mr. Quarcoo revealed that the team will break camp temporarily and then re assemble in the next few days to prepare for the 15th AIBA World Championship slated for Milan, Italy, in September.
And as part of efforts to leave good footprints in Milan, Mr. Quarcoo and boxing legend Azumah Nelson, the technical director of GABA, who was also at the Airport, mentioned that they will secure the services of a physical trainer for the team, ahead of the World Championship.
Reacting to whether the team will embark on a foreign training tour, the GABA boss pointed out that his outfit has limited time to put such a program together.
He, however, suggested that the multi-purpose 'Bridge Foundation Gym', sited at Roman Ridge, would be available for use as the boxers fine-tune for the championship.
Seven out of the eleven boxers qualified for the Italian championship, having excelled n their various categories.
The boxers who qualified for the World Championship are skipper Manyo Plange, Frederick Lawson, Emmanuel Quartey, Issah Samir, Habib Ahmed, Awusone Yekini and Ahmed Saraku.
Manyo Plange finished as the overall best boxer and won himself a beautiful silverware.
He won Ghana's only gold medal. Frederick Lawson won the only silver, while the five won bronze
