President JEA Mills has expressed his wish to see Ghana emerge as winners of the forthcoming hockey showpiece to be hosted by Ghana, beginning this Friday to July 18th, 2009.
He, however, cautioned that if Ghana fails to realize that dream, that should not, in anyway stifle Ghana's quest to raise the bar in the sport, saying “If the team fails to win the tournament, we must make sure that the level of hockey is moved a step higher and to serve as an example to the other disciplines.”
Commissioning the high profile hockey stadium in Accra last Monday, President Mills, a former hockey player advocated for the regular maintenance of the 1,200 capacity edifice, noting that “Irregular maintenance culture has been the bane of state properties, but I believe my hockey folks will esteem the culture of maintenance for this stadium.”
He urged Ghanaians to patronize the 10-day hockey championship that will see South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt and host Ghana (male and female teams) battling for supremacy.
President Mills revealed that the construction of the new stadium is an indication of government's commitment to give all sporting disciplines equal attention.
“A concerted effort is consequently being made to explore all avenues to sensitize Ghanaians of all walks of life to take interest in the many sports disciplines that have the capacity of taking the youth to the pinnacle of their potential, added President Mills.
He commended the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the contractors, Micheletti and Co. Ltd. for a good work done.
After inspecting the VIP stand of the stadium in the company of the chairman of the Ghana Hockey Association(GHA) Mr. Oko Nikoi-Dzani, Mr Worlanyo Agra, acting chief executive of the National Sports Council (NSC), he conduced the official bully-off, which generated applause from the jubilant spectators.
That was followed by a senior's gala competition played under flood lights.
