NACOB workers furious over police 'invasion'

Workers of the Narcotic Control Board (NACOB) say they are unhappy that qualified persons in the service are denied appointments to senior management positions.

Rather, they argue, those positions are given to people from other establishments such as the Ghana Police Service.

The workers say the situation is partly responsible for the persistent poor conditions of service.

The Executive Secretary, the Director of Enforcement and the current Head of Operations are all senior police officers on the payroll of the Ghana Police Service.

“Because they are all on secondment, they wouldn't want to do anything whatsoever that will make NACOB a better place than the police service.

“They don't have the work at heart, they don't have the workers at heart, they don't go through what the workers are going through.

“We are crippled in every sphere of our operation,” a disgruntled worker told Joy News.

As a matter of urgency, the workers are calling for an end to this practice and are appealing to government to improve their conditions of service.

Meanwhile, latest news reaching Myjoyonline indicates some youth in the Tamale metropolis are increasingly taking to drugs.

The spiritual leader of the Salawatia Muslim Group in Tamale, Imam Rashid Salawatia, said the use of cocaine and other narcotic drugs in the municipality is rising and poses a threat to stability of the entire region.

While some puff away Indian hemp, others sniff hard crack.

He intimated that the intake of narcotics has been partly responsible for the recent violent clashes in the municipality.

He said the practice is worrying since it is predominant among the youth.
