Kumasi, May 31, GNA – Kumasi Girls Senior High School (SHS) at the weekend played a cohesive and determined game to beat Saint Louis SHS 1-0 in the grand finale of the Girls' Division of the 2009 Ashanti Regional Inter-Second Cycle Schools Hockey championship played at the Hockey Pitch of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
Ernestina Coffie scored the only goal for Kumasi Girls in the 10th minute of the event which was held under the auspices of the Schools and Colleges Sports Federation.
It was all joy as the winners went into wild jubilation soon after skipper Elizabeth Opoku was presented with the giant trophy at stake.
Konongo-Odumase SHS beat Mampong Saint Monica's SHS 1-0 to take the third place match trophy.
On the way to the finals, Kumasi Girls whacked Konongo-Odumase 2-0 whilst Saint Louis defeated Saint Monica's 2-1.
In the Boys' division, Prempeh College scored Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) SHS 3-1 in the penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 score line after the regulation time.
Prempeh College also presented with a trophy which was received by skipper Augustine Antwi.
In the overall Boys' event was played on a round robin basis that saw Prempeh College amassing eight points, followed by KNUST with five points and Offinso Dwamena Akenten SHS and Tepa SHS with four points and one point each, respectively.
Mr Charles Mensah, Regional Physical Education Co-ordinator of the Ghana Education Service (GES), praised the participating teams for their discipline and stressed the need for stakeholders to invest in hockey to help unearth talents for the nation.
