THE STARS WERE WOEFUL Ghana failed to win the inaugural African Nations Championship after a 0-2 defeat to an impressive DR Congo side at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium on Sunday.

After a stalemate first half although Ghana scored a disallowed goal in the 33rd minute, DRC looked more purposeful and motivated for the trophy.

A minute in the second half, the Leopards struck first to unsettle the Ghanaians through winger Kaluyituka.

Captain Lofo rounded up Samuel Inkoom on the flanks and glided in a cross that found the head of Kaluyituka whose connection bounced off the turf and beat goalie McCarthy.

The Leopards maintained their dominance and succeeded in authenticating their lead on 74 minutes through Mbenza Bedi who blasted past MacCarthy from Lofo again from the left.

The win handed the DRC their first major silverware since the 1974 African Cup of Nations winning feat in Egypt.

The Black Stars only bright moment was when Yaw Antwi was spotted in an illegal position when his header inside the box beat goalkeeper Kidiaba but that would not count.

Ghana had truimphed 3-0 over the Simbas in the final Group B match played in Bouake last Sunday.

The second edition of the CHAN will be hosted by Sudan in 2011.
