Loopers Win 4 Medals At Africa Tourney

The national table tennis youth team, comprising two boys and a girl, won three gold and one silver at the African Table Tennis Federation (Laurent Gbagbo) Championship held in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, from December 18 to 22.

Ghana won the team event gold after successfully beating the current African youth champions, Congo Brazzaville, 3-2 in the semi-finals before accounting for Cote d'Ivoire 3-1 in the final.

The three gold medals were won in the Under-21 female singles, Under-15 male singles and the male team event comprising the Under-15 boys and the Under-18 boys. The silver was won in the Under-18 boys category.

Ghana's team comprised Akosua Ketu from Agona Swedru, Samuel Akayade from Koforidua Secondary Technical and Derek Abrefa of the Ghana Immigration Service.

 
Coach Anthony Owusu-Ansah was the technical head. The team was led by Mr Kwame Amponfi Jnr, the Secretary General of the Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA).

The GTTA expressed gratitude to the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC),  National Sports Council, Aqua-In Limited, Ghana Television (GTV) and Mrs Arsha Taimako, the Manageress of the Sports Council Canteen, for supporting the team during the trip.

It also thanked the media for their support throughout the year.
