GLO, Premier Clubs In Standoff

Prospective title sponsors of the Premier League, Globacom Telecommunications, are still battling with premiership clubs over the expected mileage for their $15million package for the elite competition.

The entire membership of the premier league, though welcoming the entry of Globacom, are unanimous against some of the benefits which the new sponsors want to appropriate from the deal.

The Glo deal was expected to be signed this week but the disagreement has led to a stalement and the clubs are demanding that the prospective sponsors and the Premier League Board settle for a deal acceptable to both parties.

According to sources, the clubs are in disagreement with the sponsors' proposals to have their logo embossed on the shirts of all the jerseys to be used during premiership matches.

But it appears this embossement will not be in the interest of some clubs, especially the likes of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak and King Faisal, who have already clinched deals with some telecommunications companies.

Both Hearts and Faisal have sponsorships deals with MTN while Kotoko are seriously committed to Tigo, another telecommunication service provider.

The clubs are equally in disagreement with the demands of Glo to place their logos on the pants and sleeves of the jerseys of the participating teams.

Another point of disagreement is the desire by the new sponsors to brand the buses of the 16 clubs, an issue also being resisted fiercely by the clubs. Story by Andy Quao
