Graphic Sports Does It Again
Graphic Sports maintained its status as the nation's premier sports paper after winning the Sports Paper of the Year for the fourth year running at last Saturday's National Sports Journalists awards held at the poolside of the plush Holiday Inn Hotel at Airport City in Accra.
In further confirming the paper's esteemed position in the print media, Maurice Quansah of Graphic Sports won the Sports Writer of the Year, while Isaac 'Opeele' Boateng, a columnist of the paper, won the Sports Columnist of the Year prize.
It was a continuation of a clean sweep of the print media awards at the National Sports Journalist Awards since its inception four years ago.
Graphic Sports' Michael Quaye won the 2004 Sports Writer of the Year Award and was succeeded the following year by Maurice Quansah and Kwame Asare-Boadu in 2007.
Last year Graphic Sports' Ebo Kwaitoo won the Sports Columnist of the Year award, while Ebow Hanson and Emmanuel Quaye were named best Sports Photo Journalists in 2004 and 2006 respectively.
Last Saturday's event, organised by Media Trust Limited, was supported by such corporate bodies as Toyota Ghana Limited, Somo Vision, UT Financial Services Limited, TT Brothers, MultiChoice and Stanbic Bank.
It was well attended by sports journalists particularly those based in Accra and Kumasi in the most keenly contested awards since it was instituted to celebrate and honour excellence in sports journalism.
Each winner walked home with various prizes from the sponsors.
The prizes included LG TV sets, LG refrigerators, LG DVD players and DStv satellite receivers in addition to trophies.
Other notable winners were Metro TV, who won the Sports Station of the Year (TV) for the fourth year running, Kessben FM, Kumasi (Best Sports Station, Radio), Dan Kweku Yeboah of Peace FM (Best Radio Commentator in Akan), Nana Adarkwah of Radio Gold (Best Radio Commentator in English), Christopher Opoku of Metro TV (Best TV Commentator), Pot of Kotoko Express (Best Cartoonist), All Sports newspaper (Innovation), Henry Asante of GTV (Most Promising Sports Journalist) and Michael Oti Adjei of TV3 (Best TV Sports Presenter).There was a special award given to boxing legend, Barima Azumah Nelson, in recognition of his outstanding career and impressive comeback at 50.
