INTERNATIONAL Boxing Federation (IBF) bantamweight champion, Joseph Agbeko, is set to make the first defence of his title against William Gonzalez of Nicaragua.

The bout is expected to come off at the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey, USA on Thursday, December 1, 2008.

Agbeko (25-22 KOs), won the IBF strap from Luis Alberto Perex whom he Kayoed in round seven in September last year, but is still to make a defence of the title.

He was first billed to face Gonzalez early this year, but the bout was called off at the last minute by the fight-makers after the camp of the challenger pulled out, citing health problems.

Gonzalez (21-2, 19 Kos), has also pulled out of two other dates for acrimonious reasons, the last one being an August 2 showdown for reasons better known to his camp.

The Ghanaian champion all this while, has remained calm and is positive about his chances of holding on to the belt he won in Sacramento, California last year.

“I see this as an opportunity to stamp my authority in this division, and no matter how many times he runs away from me, he cannot hide”, the champ said recently.

He added, “the long lay off will not affect me in anyway, as I have remained in very good physical condition, ready to rumble on any occasion”.

His major aim is to unify the division, and this is his major priority in the coming year starting with this bout against the much protected Gonzalez.
