Stephen Sowu

Stephen Sowu

He was unknown even as a Division One League (DOL) player in Ghana football, but when the MTN Soccer Academy Reality Show presented the opportunity, Stephen Sowu glowed brightly from the nearly 1000 youngsters who applied to participate.

The 18-year-old was christened “Teammate #2” after the open ballot when he and some 13 others became the final candidates for the five-month show at the Ridge Academy House.

But despite the stern contest that characterised the football reality show, Sowu emerged tops with the ultimate prize of a sleek brand new Hyundai i30 car from Autoplaza, GH¢5,000, sponsorship for a training programme with an European team, plus a trip to the grand opening ceremony of the South Africa 2008 World Cup. He is the second winner of the competition.

Until he entered the Academy House, he had been a player of DOL debutantes Soccer Learners during the last season, but whatever talent he showed was suppresed by the total indifferent performance of the squad that left them escaping relegation largely on technical grounds.
