PLB Crowns Bekoe

THE PROFESSIONAL League Board (PLB), in collaboration with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), last Friday organized a ceremony to award players, coaches, sports administrators and some stakeholders who distinguished themselves during the last soccer season.

The event was attended by some important personalities including the Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana, Alhaji Aliu Mahama; Kwesi Nyantakyi, President of the GFA; Alhaji M.N.D.

Jawula, former GFA President; Welbeck Abra-Appiah, Chairman of the PLB; Conrad Van Niekerk, General Manager of Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Ghana Limited; and Dickson Oduro-Nyaning, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Telecom.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko striker Eric Bekoe emerged the winner of the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2007/08 soccer season at the third edition of the PLB Awards Night held at the Round Pavillon of the Trade Fair in Accra last Friday October 24, 2008.

Bekoe who also lifted the Goal-king Award with 17 goals to his credit last season to earn a decoder from Gateway Broadcasting Service (GBS), emerged best player of the season ahead of two others, Harrison Afful and Dominic Adiyah now in Norway. He was the third player to win the award after Issa Ahmed in 2005/06 and Michael Essien in 2006/07.

Bekoe who was accompanied by his mother, was presented with a VW Saloon car, and a trophy by the Vice-President who was the special guest of honour at the function.

The Vice President was presented with a Special Award by the organizers for his contribution and support for the development of football in the country. A Special Meritorious Service Award went to Justice Anin-Yeboah while A.K.B. Ampiah, former President of the FA Congress was appointed the honorary President of the GFA with each award winner receiving a plaque, cash prizes and other products from sponsors.

Alexander Asante and Emmanuel Gyimah of the GFA were each given Special Awards for Junior and Senior categories respectively while the Fair Play Team Award went to Kumasi-based King Faisal who took home a giant trophy.

Three teams namely Champions Asante Kotoko, Heart of Lions and Berekum Arsenals received GH¢10,000, GH¢6,000 and GH¢4000 respectively for placing first, second and third, while each participating club in the just-ended OneTouch Premier League was presented with a video footage of all their matches and certificates.

Supporters of Asante Kotoko Circles were adjudged the best and according to the PLB, kits will be printed in their colours to be given to them. Haruna Ayuba emerged Best Assistant Referee, William Agbovi Best Referee, Sylvester Owusu of Kotoko Best CEO; the Discovery of the Season Award went to Hearts of Oak's Kofi Abanga; Abdoulaye Soulemana of Asante Kotoko was named Best Goal Keeper and Harrison Afful Best Defender.

The sponsors had their turn with Coca Cola winning the Bronze Award; Silver Award went to GBS and the Gold Award to OneTouch Telecom Company.
