200 golfers to compete for Accra Open trophy

This year's Accra Open Golf Championship would see a keen competition when golfers from the West African sub-region converge at the Achimota Golf Course in Accra on Saturday, October 25, to begin a battle for the ultimate trophy.

Mr Kwabena Oteng Aboagye, General Manager of the Achimota Golf Club told GNA Sports in Accra on Tuesday that about 200 golfers are expected to participate in the two-day 36-Hole event, which would be sponsored by Ghana Commercial Bank Limited.

He said the event, which would be played according to the rules of the Ghana Golf Association and the local rules of the Achimota Golf Club, has Handicap 18 and 24 respectively as the entry requirements.

Among the array of golfers to be seen in action in the competition, which is in its 58th year are local champions including Emmanuel Mensah Kwame, T.K. Gouvinus, Charles Tabi, Matthias Dorfe, Mike Ezan, Mike Aggrey, Robert Evans, Professor Michael Ben-George and Paul List, all of the Achimota Golf Club.

Emos Korblah of the Tema Country Golf Club is expected to defend the title he won in the Professional's category last year as he battles fellow club-mates, Victor Brave-Mensah, Baba Akologo, Vincent Torgah and John Dorman in the 72-hole hectic event.

The juniors would take their turn in a nine-hole competition, which would be played only on Saturday, October 25.

Kofi Yeboah, Nana Yeboah and Gyimah Yaya have indicated their determination on winning the Juniors trophy for the first time.

Mr K. G. Osei Bonsu, Chairman of the Board of Directors and the Managing Director of Ghana Commercial Bank, Mr Lawrence Adu Mante, are expected to grace the occasion.
