Glentoran Football Academy in Sunyani has presented football apparels worth GHC 7,100 to the Brong-Ahafo Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service in support of the on-going under-15 football festival in Techiman.
The kits are made up of 83 red and white jerseys, 16 blue and white jerseys, 15 red and white Nike shirts, 31 white tops and 21 pairs of black and white Nike footwear.
Others are five track suits, three pairs of boots, 40 balls, 35 caps, three bags, 32 red shorts, two long sleeves goalkeepers' shirts and 34 white shorts.
The Academy has also earmarked kits worth GHC 30,000 for distribution in the region for other sporting and social events to help shape the lifestyle of the youth, most especially, those from less privileged homes.
Making the presentation, Mr. Willian Annin Frimpong, Project Director, noted that sports talents, particularly football players abound in the region and there was the need to help harness such talents.
He said it was against this background that that the Academy “stepped into the streets and picked some boys from vulnerable homes to help shape their talents for good living.”
Mr. Frimpong disclosed that the Academy donated kits including footballs, jerseys and hoses, valued at GHC 6,200 to Ghana Education Service during the regional super zonal sports festival held in Sunyani recently.
He expressed gratitude to Mercy Corps, an international NGO, through whose benevolence the Academy got the kits to promote the growth of sports in the region.
Mr. Frimpong expressed optimism that the presentation would be a motivating factor for both the children and their instructors to reach greater heights.
Mrs. Akua Akubour Debrah, Regional Director of Education, who received the items thanked the Academy for the gesture and urged other organisations to emulate it.
She explained that sports was part of education and advised parents to encourage their children, who had the talents and interest in sports to participate in them.
Mrs. Debrah expressed appreciation to parents, who permitted their children to participate in the festival.
