Arsenal came from behind to beat Chelsea 4-1 and clinch their fifth Women’s Premier League title in a row.

The Gunners, who usually play at Boreham Wood, added to their growing list of silverware with victory over the Blues at the Emirates Stadium.

Emma Whitter put Chelsea ahead but Karen Carney bagged a brace and Kelly Smith and Kim Little also notched.

Coach Vic Akers said: 'It’s great to win the title again, it feels as good as it has done every year we won it.'

The cabinet may be bare for another season for Arsene Wenger’s Premiership team but not so for the women’s side led by Akers, who is kit man to Wenger’s squad.

Under Akers the Gunners have won the League 10 times in the last 16 seasons, during which time they have also won the FA Cup eight times and the League Cup nine.

He added: 'It was particularly nice to do it at the Emirates and in front of a decent crowd - that made it a special night for the girls.' Akers’ team took their League title haul into double figures with an impressive second half display in front of a crowd of 5,285.

They had started slowly and went behind through a 16th-minute goal by Blues striker Whitter.

Winger Carney equalised five minutes later then, after striker Lianne Sanderson had missed a penalty, Smith struck home a 32nd-minute spot-kick.

The Gunners took control after the interval but were unable to wrap up victory until goals in the final nine minutes by midfielder Little and Carney.

'Chelsea pushed us,' said Akers, 'but once we took charge I was sure we would win the game and the third goal made it safe.'

Arsenal now aim to complete the double of League and FA Cup when they meet Leeds United in next month’s Cup final at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground.
