Two former holders Hearts of Oak of Ghana and Morocco's FAR Rabat were eliminated after the first round of matches in the Champions League. The 2001 champions from Accra were knocked out of the competition by Gabonese side FC 105 Libreville on a 4-3 aggregate on Sunday.

Hearts needed to overturn a 3-0 deficit but could only manage a 3-1 win in the second leg game at home.

FAR Rabat also suffered a shock elimination from the tournament at the hands of little-known Sporting Praia of Cape Verde on Saturday.

The 1985 champions were eliminated 5-4 on penalties after the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate in Praia.

Sporting Praia won the second-leg game 3-0 thanks to a brace by Jwaw Tegana, overturning the first leg deficit.

The Cape Verdians shocked the visitors on 11 minutes through Tegana, who got the better of FAR Rabat's defenders before opening the scoring.

They doubled their lead on the half hour mark through Lovandeur Mandouza before Tegana struck again with only five minutes remaining.

Elsewhere on Saturday, South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns thrashed visiting Miembeni of Zanzibar 4-0 in their second leg game.

That result means that Sundowns win the tie 5-0 on aggregate.

Sundowns' win came thanks to first half goals from Bryan Aldave and Lerato Chabangu and then two strikes late in the game from Zimbabwe striker Peter Ndlovu.

Stade Malien of Mali restored some pride after their goalless away draw to Angolan side Primeiro Agosto on Saturday.

But the Malians were still eliminated from the tournament after they lost the first leg 2-1 in Bamako.

Curepipe Starlight of Mauritius are also though to the next round despite losing 1-0 in Comoros to Coin Nord Mitsiamiouli.

The side from Mauritius win the tie on aggregate after they won 2-0 at home two weeks ago.

Meanwhile on Friday, Entente Setif of Algeria beat ASC SNIM of Mauritania 2-0 in the second leg of their game to complete a 7-1 aggregate win.

The former African champions opened the scoring at home after just 5 minutes when Mourad Delhoum picked up a ball that rebounded off the post and slammed it home.

The victory was completed 10 minutes later when an unmarked Fares Mecheri picked up a pass on the edge of the area and found the target.
