Management of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a leading waste management company in Accra, has indicated its readiness to keep the four venues of the Ghana 2008 tournament clean.

According to Isabella Gyau Orhin, Communications Manager of the company, who disclosed this during a press briefing in Accra last Friday, Zoomlion attaches a lot importance to keeping the country clean during the African soccer fiesta in order to send a signal to the rest of the world that Ghana was indeed a beacon of hope on the continent in all respects.

“Ensuring proper sanitation habits therefore will be key for the tournament,” she advised.

The company's campaign started way back in October 2007 when it sent a delegation to tour Germany's FIFA 2006 stadia and in addition to this, “we have intensified the beautification of the country with flowers, shrubs, trees and grassing in the four stadia cities,” she intimated.

Ms Orhin disclosed that since January 2006 when the company was formed, it had undertaken a lot of activities that had improved immensely the environmental sanitation of the country.

“Key among them has been our Management Services Contract with the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) where we are responsible for environmental sanitation services along major roads and ceremonial streets.

“We are also the first waste management company to introduce road sweepers and road washers in this country.

“Our desire to approach waste management services in a professional manner has placed us in the limelight,” the Communications Manager added.

On his part, Zoomlion's Head of Operations, Lawrence Laryea averred that the company's interest in the Ghana 2008 tournament stemmed from the fact that waste management was an important component of every activity that results in the congregation of people, including sporting activities.

“As you are aware, the company was contracted to provide cleaning and other environmental sanitation services during the Four Nations tournament in November last year. Our efficient service at the Ohene Djan and Baba Yara Stadium has become a memorial in the nation's soccer history.”

He revealed that once again Zoomlion had been contracted by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and the National Sports Council (NSC) to provide environmental sanitation services for the fourth coming Ghana 2008 tournament beginning January 20, 2008.

“As part of efforts to even do better, we have recruited about 1,000 workers to take charge of environmental sanitation services in the four stadia in Accra, Kumasi, Sekondi-Takoradi and Tamale.”

The Head of Operations said the company was currently training staff to ensure that they deliver a world class service since the tournament was an international one. By Kenneth Yankah
