Tennis: 5th Seniors Open Dec 6-15

From December 6, the Accra Lawn Tennis Club will host the fifth Seniors Open tournament — the top prizes being return air tickets to Nigeria with two nights stay as well as ¢1.5 million cash for the winner of the men's open singles category which will be used to rank players as directed by the International Tennis Federation.

The tournament, put together by the Greater Accra Regional Co-ordinating Council in conjunction with the Ghana Tennis Association (GTA) and ALTC, will feature eight categories for both male and female players.

Mr Peter Annan, the Tournament Director, told the Daily Graphic in an interview that registration had already begun and would end on December 3.

The official draw will be held on December 4 and published on the ALTC notice board on December 5. The matches will begin on December 6 and will be played between 3pm and 8pm daily except on weekends when the games will be played between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The forms will be available at all tennis clubs that will be participating in the tournament. They are ALTC, Aviation Social Centre, Ghana Club (Adabraka), Air Force, Armed Forces Officers Mess, Stanchart Club, Golden Tulip, Tema-based Ghacem Sports Club, TOR Sports Club and TDC Sports Club, Tesano Club and 37 Officers Mess.

The categories to be competed in are Ladies Singles 25 years and above, ladies singles 40 years and above, men's singles 30 years and above, men's singles 40 years and above, men's open singles 18 years and above. Registration for these categories will be GH¢10.

The remaining categories, men's doubles 50 years and above, men's super doubles 60 years and above and mixed doubles will cost each player GH¢6 to register.

The age requirement for the mixed doubles is 30 years for men and 25 years and above for ladies. Other prizes to be won include mobile phones,towels, polo shirts, strings, lubricants and T-shirts.

The Seniors Open Tennis Championship is under the distinguished patronage of the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Sheikh I.C. Quaye.
