Black Stars: Newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz hails Ghana’s football legacy

Newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has expressed admiration for Ghana’s rich football tradition, describing the West African nation as a “footballing soul” with a proud history of producing exceptional talent.

The experienced Portuguese tactician was officially confirmed on Monday evening, taking charge of Ghana on a short-term four-month contract aimed at guiding the team to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

In his first public remarks after signing, Queiroz struck a tone of gratitude and determination.

“It is with a deep sense of gratitude, responsibility, and humility that I embrace this new chapter with Ghana. This is not just another job; it is a mission.”

The former Real Madrid and Iran national team coach also praised Ghana’s football identity, highlighting the country’s talent pool and sporting culture.

“Ghana is a nation of talent, pride, and footballing soul. I arrive with respect for its history and belief in its future.”

“Together, with unity, discipline, and ambition, we will work to honour the expectations of a great football nation," he added.

Queiroz is expected to begin work immediately, with his early agenda centred on squad assessment, building his technical team, and refining tactical plans ahead of the tournament.

He will get his first opportunity to evaluate the squad in next month’s international friendly against Mexico, before Ghana concludes its World Cup preparations against Wales on June 2.

Ghana will make its fifth appearance at the global showpiece and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and wrapping up the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
