President Mahama graces 4th FNB Head of State Invitational Golf Tournament at Achimota

The fourth edition of the FNB Head of State Invitational Golf Tournament wrapped up in grand class at the Achimota Golf Club in Accra, drawing more than 140 amateur golfers from across the country.

The event carried an extra layer of prestige this year as President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, struck the ceremonial tee shots to officially get play underway.

Staged under the theme “Giving Back to the Community Through Golf,” the 2025 tournament reinforced its standing as one of Ghana’s premier amateur competitions, traditionally held under the patronage of the sitting President.

Northwestern Solutions organised the event in partnership with the Ghana Golf Association, with First National Bank (FNB) as the headline sponsor. A strong lineup of supporting partners — including the National Petroleum Authority, Aphro, La Villa Aphro, Mundus, SAP GP, Danny List Foundation, Caveman Watches, The Luckiest, John Walker Nguvu Mining Limited and others — backed the tournament.

With ideal weather and a lively ambience setting the tone, golfers battled across four divisions, each aware of the prestige that comes with success at this invitational.

John Ayayee, playing off a handicap of 9, topped the main leaderboard with 44 points, finishing ahead of Elisee Sezan and Isaac Asante, who claimed second and third place respectively.

In Men’s Group B, Esukis Esukise Martin (handicap 24) led the field with an impressive 46 points, followed by Kingsley Ayesu and John Djiedjorm Jaja.
Canada-based golfer Flora Hurtubisae delivered on her promise in the Ladies Group A category, winning with 40 points. Vastie Amoafo Yeboah and Mary Prempeh completed the top three. In Ladies Group B, Marlene Tonyigah captured the top prize, with Princess Nkansah Boadu finishing second and Achimota Golf Club Lady Captain Kous Louanges Mang taking third.

At the closing ceremony, Event Chairman Prince Kofi Amoabeng and Achimota Golf Club President Frank Adu Jnr. commended the organisers for upholding the tradition of aligning the tournament with the presidency. They also thanked President Mahama for his commitment to sports development and called for increased government investment in the sector, noting its wide social and economic value.

FNB Executive Director Sylvia Inkoom lauded the smooth organisation of the competition and reiterated the bank’s pride in supporting it.

Ghana Golf Association President Kwaku Okyere and Sports Minister Kofi Adams both underscored golf’s growing role in tourism, recreation and national development. Minister Adams also appealed to the President to help resolve the land encroachment issues threatening the Celebrity Golf Club.

President Mahama, speaking after enjoying his first full engagement with the sport, hinted that he may take up golf himself. He praised organisers and sponsors for staging a remarkable tournament and assured that the Celebrity Golf Club land matter would receive urgent attention.
