Former Black Stars defender John Paintsil has turned down a GHS100,000 compensation offer from the Multimedia Group and sports broadcaster Patrick Osei Agyemang, widely known as “Countryman Songo,” as part of an ongoing defamation lawsuit.
The case stems from comments made by Countryman Songo on a popular sports show aired by Multimedia, which Paintsil contends were false and damaging to his reputation and legacy in Ghanaian football.
Paintsil is seeking GHS25 million in total compensation—GHS20 million from the media house and an additional GHS5 million directly from Countryman Songo—arguing that the remarks have had a profound impact on both his professional image and personal life.
Sources close to the former international say he found the GHS100,000 offer “insulting,” considering the gravity of the allegations and the public platform on which they were made. The proposed amount was reportedly intended to settle the dispute out of court.
Paintsil is being represented by Theophilus Tawiah of WTS Nobisfields, a respected law firm with expertise in litigation and corporate legal matters. The firm is also the Ghana affiliate of WTS Global, a leading international legal and tax network.
At the last court hearing on July 18, 2025, the presiding judge ordered the defendants to submit their witness statements within two weeks, after previously failing to do so. The next hearing—a Case Management Conference—has been scheduled for October 17, 2025.
Paintsil, who enjoyed a celebrated career with the national team and remains a prominent figure in Ghanaian football, has vowed to see the legal process through, insisting that justice must prevail.
The case has reignited debate over media responsibility and ethics in sports journalism, especially concerning how public figures are portrayed in the press. Legal analysts suggest that the outcome could set a precedent for defamation suits involving celebrities and major media organizations in Ghana.
As of now, Multimedia Group has not issued a formal response to Paintsil’s rejection of their settlement proposal.
