Former SWAG President Ackah Anthony passes away

Mr. Ackah Anthony, former president of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), has sadly passed away, according to a report by Joy Sports.

He died in the early hours of Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the Police Hospital in Accra.

Mr. Anthony served as president of SWAG from 2007 to 2015, during which he championed numerous initiatives that shaped the growth and credibility of sports journalism in Ghana.

Under his leadership, the association organized several successful editions of the prestigious SWAG Awards—the longest-running award scheme in the country.

A respected voice in sports media, Mr. Anthony was also a former Assistant Editor at Graphic Sports under the Graphic Communications Group Limited.

He was widely known for his hard-hitting Candid Corner column, which featured on the back page of The Mirror newspaper. His writings boldly addressed key issues in Ghana's sporting landscape and consistently challenged those in authority.

Among his many contributions, Mr. Anthony spearheaded the redesign and refurbishment of the SWAG Club House in Dansoman, Accra, and led a nationwide membership drive that significantly strengthened the association.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn—a former director at the Ministry of Information—and four children.
