The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has revealed that Ghana’s sports sector is currently in a critical phase of transformation aimed at long-term development and sustainability.
In an interview with Asaase Radio, Mr. Ampofo Ankrah described the current period as a turning point that demands intentional planning, sustained investment, and a united national effort.
“Ghana’s sport is repositioning. That is why the reset agenda is so important. It begins with each and every one of us,” he stated.
“We have suffered a lot of setbacks and have not had enough to celebrate. Occasionally, we do, but it has become a rare luxury.”
Despite the significant focus and resources directed towards football, the NSA chief cautioned that the success of football should not mask the broader struggles facing other sporting disciplines.
“I would not be ambitious if I say that football is doing great, given the opportunities, the platforms, and the support it enjoys to excel,” he said.
To tackle these challenges and lay the foundation for a more inclusive sports environment, Ampofo Ankrah is advocating for the introduction of a comprehensive 10-year national sports development plan.
He stressed the need to move away from short-term, reactionary approaches and instead embrace a structured, long-term vision for sports growth.
He also underscored the importance of collaboration between key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ghana Olympic Committee, sports federations, private sector partners, and academic institutions, in driving this transformation.
