Ghana’s U-15 girls' team, the Black Damsels, made history on Saturday, April 26, by winning the 2025 African Schools Football Championship after a commanding 2-0 victory over Uganda at the University of Ghana Stadium.
Belinda Kpentey and Daniella Abass found the net to seal a remarkable triumph for the Black Damsels, capping off an outstanding tournament campaign.
The young Ghanaians entered the final full of confidence, having gone unbeaten in the group stage with wins over Morocco, Benin, and Malawi. They then overcame defending champions South Africa in a thrilling semifinal to book their place in the championship match.
Uganda, for their part, secured their spot after edging Morocco in their semifinal encounter.
The final nearly started in disaster for the hosts when goalkeeper Precious made an early error, but Uganda failed to capitalise. After that scare, Ghana took control of proceedings, with Daniella Abass and Hajara Adam both threatening the Ugandan goal. Despite their dominance, the first half ended goalless.
Ghana returned from the break with renewed purpose. Belinda Kpentey opened the scoring, finishing off a brilliant move initiated by Christiana Ashiaku, who latched onto a loose ball, outpaced her markers, and delivered a perfect assist.
The Black Damsels then doubled their lead when Daniella Abass showed great composure to make a strong run into the box and calmly slot the ball past the Ugandan goalkeeper.
Although Uganda pressed for a way back into the game, Ghana’s defense stood firm to secure an emotional and historic victory, made even more special by the fact that this was the Black Damsels' debut in the competition.
As champions, Ghana’s U-15 girls will take home a cash prize of $300,000, while the runners-up, Uganda, will receive $200,000. The third-place teams in both the boys’ and girls’ tournaments will each receive $150,000.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s U-15 boys’ team also finished their tournament on a high note. Coached by Kwaku Danso, they rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Uganda 2-1 in the third-place playoff, securing the bronze medal at the same venue on Saturday.
