Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka has expressed his disappointment following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Black Stars, four-time champions of the continent, endured a tough qualifying campaign, finishing at the bottom of their group with just three points from six matches.
Speaking in an interview with Joy Sports, Onyeka shared his reaction: “I was sad for them."
“I know they didn’t play well in the AFCON qualifiers, but they’re almost through to the World Cup. It’s always good to have Ghana in international competitions — I have friends in the Ghanaian team.”
Onyeka, who will represent Nigeria in the upcoming Unity Cup, acknowledged the deep-rooted football rivalry and cultural connection between the two West African nations.
The 27-year-old is part of the Super Eagles squad for the Unity Cup 2025 — a friendly tournament aimed at rekindling the historic rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana.
“I am looking forward to that game,” Onyeka said. “It is always a big rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana, and it’s good to have this Cup game to bring the country together. Hopefully, we will win against Ghana.”
